The uneasy feeling you get in a creepy old building may not be the result of a supernatural presence, but of infrasound. Researchers have found that low-frequency sound waves, often produced by plumbing systems, heating ducts, or even wind passing through a structure, can trigger sensations commonly associated with hauntings.
Infrasound refers to sound waves below the range of human hearing, typically under 20 hertz. While you cannot consciously hear these frequencies, your body can still feel them. They can cause vibrations in the chest, a sense of pressure in the ears, and even feelings of anxiety or dread. Some studies suggest that exposure to infrasound can make people feel like they are being watched or that something is present in the room.
This phenomenon has been observed in old houses with rattling pipes, large industrial buildings, and even churches where organ music produces low frequencies. In one well-known experiment, listeners exposed to infrasound during a concert reported feeling chills, sadness, and a sense of the supernatural, even though they were unaware of the sound source.
So before you call a ghost hunter, it might be worth calling a plumber or an HVAC technician. That cold spot in the corner or that strange humming in the attic could be nothing more than a loose pipe or a faulty furnace. While it is less exciting than a ghost story, the explanation is often far more practical. And for those who prefer the mystery, well, there is always the chance that the pipes are just a cover for something else entirely.
