Can’t Get Along? Try Rejecting Free Will

Can’t Get Along? Try Rejecting Free Will

No one freely chose their brain chemistry, their upbringing, or the genetic dice roll that shaped their temperament. That is the core argument gaining traction among a new wave of psychologists and philosophers: the idea that rejecting free will might actually improve our relationships. The logic is simple. If no one truly authors their own character, then holding grudges becomes a waste of energy.

The shift is away from moral outrage and toward practical problem solving. When a partner snaps at you, the automatic reaction is to see it as a personal attack. But if you view that outburst as the result of a stressful day, a lack of sleep, or a deeply ingrained habit they never chose, the sting fades. You stop asking "why are they doing this to me?" and start asking "what conditions made this happen?"

That question is far more useful. It moves the conversation from blame to influence. We cannot change the past, and we cannot change the core wiring of another person. But we can change the environment. We can set boundaries, adjust routines, and communicate needs without the heavy fog of judgment.

This does not mean excusing bad behavior. It means treating it like a weather system. You do not get angry at the rain for falling; you bring an umbrella. The same applies to people. By dropping the illusion that they could have been different, we free ourselves from the exhausting cycle of resentment. We stop trying to rewrite their history and start focusing on what we can actually shape: the next moment, the next conversation, the next choice we make together. That is where real change lives.
