As you light the candles on a cake to mark the 70th birthday of artificial intelligence, it is worth remembering that another field of study turns the same age this year: cognitive science. The two disciplines were born together in the summer of 1956, at a now-famous conference at Dartmouth College. That gathering is widely credited as the official launch of AI as a serious research pursuit. But it also sparked the modern study of how the human mind works, bringing together psychologists, linguists, computer scientists, and philosophers.
For seven decades, AI and cognitive science have grown up side by side, often borrowing ideas from each other. Early AI researchers looked to human problem-solving for inspiration, while cognitive scientists used computer models to test theories of memory, perception, and language. The relationship has not always been smooth. At times, AI has raced ahead, building systems that can beat grandmasters at chess or generate realistic images, while cognitive science has struggled to keep up with explaining how people actually think.
Yet the bond remains strong. Today, as AI systems become more powerful, cognitive scientists are asking new questions about what it means for a machine to understand, learn, or even be creative. And AI researchers are still turning to psychology for clues about how to build more flexible and robust intelligence. So as you celebrate the birthday of AI, raise a glass to cognitive science too. Both fields have come a long way, and their future together promises to be just as fascinating as their shared past.
