Why do some people coast while others push themselves? New research from a psychologist suggests the answer may have less to do with willpower and more to do with what happens to the work once it is finished.
The finding applies to both children and adults. When people know their effort will be preserved, saved, or returned to them in some form, they invest significantly more energy into the task. When they believe their work will simply be thrown away, motivation drops, even among people who are usually driven.
The mechanism appears to be a sense of ownership. People treat their labor as an extension of themselves. If the output is going to disappear, the effort feels pointless on a psychological level, not just a practical one. Keeping the work signals that the effort mattered, which in turn makes people willing to give more of it.
This has real implications for classrooms, workplaces, and homes. A child who knows a drawing will be displayed tries harder than one who expects it to end up in the bin. An employee who knows a report will be reviewed and stored engages more than one who suspects it will be ignored.
The lesson is simple. If you want someone to work harder, show them that what they make will not vanish.
