As the Matric class of 2026 moves closer to their final exams, the weight of expectation is becoming a daily reality for thousands of learners. While the academic material is demanding, the mental and emotional strain often proves just as challenging. Psychologists note that exam pressure is not simply about studying hard. It involves a complex mix of fear of failure, family expectations, self-worth, and uncertainty about the future.
One of the most common struggles is procrastination. It rarely comes from laziness. More often, it is a coping mechanism for anxiety. When a task feels overwhelming, the brain seeks short-term relief by avoiding it, which then creates guilt and more stress. Breaking work into smaller, manageable steps can reduce that cycle.
Confidence also plays a major role. Learners who compare themselves to classmates or fixate on past results often undermine their own progress. Experts suggest focusing on personal improvement rather than perfection. Emotional wellbeing matters too. Sleep, exercise, and honest conversations with trusted adults can make a measurable difference.
Parents and teachers have a part to play. Pressure that is constant and harsh tends to backfire. Support that is steady and realistic helps learners stay grounded. The goal is not to remove all stress, but to keep it at a level that motivates rather than paralyses. For the Matric class of 2026, the road ahead is tough, but it does not have to be walked alone.
