Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, commonly known as CTE, has become a growing concern in the world of contact sports and beyond. Once considered a rare condition, research now suggests it may be far more widespread than experts previously believed. The disease is linked to repeated blows to the head, which can happen in football, boxing, hockey, and other activities involving frequent collisions or impacts.
CTE is a progressive brain condition with no known cure. It develops when a protein called tau builds up in the brain, disrupting normal function over time. Symptoms often appear years after the injuries occurred and can include memory loss, confusion, mood swings, aggression, depression, and difficulty with balance or speech. In some cases, these changes can resemble other neurological disorders, making diagnosis difficult while a person is alive.
While there is no cure, many symptoms in suspected cases can be treated. Doctors may use medications and therapy to manage mood, behavior, and cognitive issues. This makes early recognition important. Coaches, families, and teammates should watch for warning signs such as personality changes, trouble concentrating, or unusual irritability in athletes who have suffered repeated head impacts.
Awareness and prevention remain key. Reducing head trauma through safer play and proper protective gear can lower risk. Anyone noticing concerning symptoms should seek medical advice promptly to explore available support and treatment options.
