People who view the world as devoid of meaning are more likely to support political violence. A new study suggests that simple exercises to find everyday meaning could help reduce these violent extremist intentions.
Researchers examined how a sense of purpose shapes political attitudes. They found that individuals who feel life has no larger significance often turn to extreme ideologies as a substitute. These ideologies offer clear answers and a sense of belonging. That pull can make violence seem justified.
The study involved participants who completed surveys about their outlook on life. Those who scored low on meaning were consistently more willing to endorse violent action for political ends. The effect held even after accounting for factors like age, education, and prior political views.
What stands out is the potential for intervention. In a follow-up experiment, participants took part in short writing tasks. They reflected on small moments that felt meaningful, such as helping a neighbor or finishing a difficult project. After these exercises, their support for political violence dropped.
The findings do not suggest that meaning alone solves extremism. But they point to a low-cost tool that could complement existing efforts. Programs that build everyday purpose, from community volunteering to structured reflection, may weaken the appeal of violent ideologies.
Researchers caution that the results are preliminary. Still, the pattern is clear. When people find meaning in daily life, they are less likely to seek it in destruction.
