Being called a liar is uncomfortable, whether the accusation is true or not. A psychologist has outlined three strategies that can help you defend yourself effectively when someone questions your honesty.
The first approach involves staying calm and consistent. When people lie, they often add unnecessary details or change their story over time. If you are telling the truth, your account should remain steady. Resist the urge to over-explain or fill silences with nervous chatter. Simple, direct answers carry more weight than elaborate justifications.
The second strategy centers on body language. While popular belief says liars avoid eye contact, research suggests the opposite is often true. People who are lying may actually maintain eye contact to appear convincing. Instead of forcing a specific posture, focus on relaxed and natural movements. Fidgeting or stiff body language can raise suspicion even when you have nothing to hide.
The third method is to avoid becoming defensive. Reacting with anger or hostility often makes others more suspicious. A measured response, such as calmly asking why they doubt you, shifts the conversation toward a reasonable discussion rather than a confrontation.
These techniques are not about helping people deceive others. They are about understanding how suspicion works and how honest people can protect themselves when their credibility is unfairly challenged.
