New research suggests that the path to political compromise may run through an unexpected emotion: disgust. Across five experiments conducted in three countries, people who read messages describing their own political party as sophisticated rather than as brutes became more open to negotiation. The key mechanism, according to the findings, was a reduction in disgust toward the opposing side, not anger or empathy as might be expected.
The studies tested how feeling humanized, meaning seeing one's own group portrayed with dignity and competence rather than as crude or hostile, shapes willingness to bargain. Participants exposed to the more respectful framing reported greater openness to compromise, and the shift was traced specifically to lower levels of disgust. Anger and empathy did not explain the effect.
The results point to a practical lesson for political communicators and mediators. Messages that affirm the sophistication of one's own side may soften the visceral revulsion that often blocks deal-making. Rather than appealing to warm feelings toward opponents, the research suggests that reducing disgust may be the more effective route. The findings add nuance to debates about polarization, indicating that emotional tone in political messaging can meaningfully change attitudes toward negotiation.
